NEPCon is developing a new standard that provides assurance for the quality and performance of carbon footprint management. NEPCon is now seeking stakeholders' input to a draft version of the Carbon Footprinting Standard.
Accounting for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) can be a complicated task, as GHG accounting requirements are technically comprehensive and data not always readily available.
Peter Feilberg, NEPCon CEO, said, “We are developing the Carbon Footprint Management to enable companies to make more ambitious carbon reduction targets, resulting in long-term positive impacts while avoiding accusations of greenwashing. Our standard, while being technically accurate, takes strides in being simpler to implement and audit. We look forward to receiving stakeholder comments to help ensure this standard is as strong as possible.”
NEPCon has developed this standard for certification of corporate and product carbon footprint management for organisations requesting a third party audit to verify that:
- The organisation has a climate policy fulfilling the minimum requirements established by this standard
- The organisation is committed to achieve and maintain carbon neutrality according to the timeframe and targets defined in its policy
- The organisation has designed and implemented systems to ensure the climate policy is fulfilled
- The organisation is consistently monitoring, reporting and communicating upon their carbon footprint as defined in its climate policy
The standard is designed to enable organisations to meet the requirements of leading carbon footprinting standards – the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, ISO and Publicly Available Specification (PAS) – in a simplified manner. Organisations’ fulfilling the requirements for the standard can be issued the NEPCon Carbon Footprint Management Certificate, which can be used in off-product communication to investors, contractors and clients.
Seeking public comments
NEPCon is committed to developing its standards and procedures in a transparent and inclusive way that enables all stakeholders to have their say. Organisations and individuals are encouraged to submit their concerns or comments regarding this standard to NEPCon, using the email address below.
This draft standard is open to a public 60-day period of stakeholder consultation and staff reviews from 26 March to 24 May 2012, with a potential second phase of another 60 day consultation in accordance with the ISEAL Guidelines. The standard may be applied for certification work during the stakeholder consultation period.
